Tick Awareness Month

March is Tick Awareness Month.   Tick exposure can occur year round and are active any day it’s 4°C and above.  Ticks cannot fly or jump, they rest on the ends of grass or shrubs waiting for a person or animal to brush by.  Ticks can survive winter by hiding under snow, leaf and brush.

In the last decade the tick risk in Canada has changed dramatically.  Ticks are expanding their range at a rate of 46 km per year.  A recent Canadian study showed that blacklegged ticks infected with the Lyme Disease causing bacteria are the first ones to “wake up” on warmer days during cooler months.  Ticks come in all sizes and there are over 40 species in Canada.
